"The launch of the first IOTA mainnet in June 2016 was the start of the journey to revolutionize Blockchain. IOTA introduced the very first distributed ledger based on a directed acyclic graph (DAG) - a scalable and lightweight protocol to overcome rising costs and power consumption by removing miners and fees. It is called “the Tangle”. The Tangle was designed to be a more equitable, democratic and secure network, where every node would directly contribute towards the security of the overall system."
The name IOTA comes from the ancient Greek alphabet (Ἰῶτα "the smallest letter") and means "something small". The iota is the 9th letter of the ancient Greek alphabet and was pronounced identically in ancient times as it is today, namely i; the Latin letter i is also derived from it. In the IOTA communication protocol, the i stands for 1 iota and is the smallest tradable unit of value in the network, which closes the circle to "something small".
"Why Shimmer? Be early, be bold, be a pioneer: developers have an early mover advantage to build a new ecosystem of cutting-edge innovations and token economies on a feeless, bridgeless base layer. $SMR is the native token of the Shimmer network and serves as its economic backbone. The total supply has been fully distributed to early adopters by staking MIOTA tokens for $SMR tokens."
Shimmer is the incentivized Layer 1 innovation network, built to spark the growth of feeless and highly interoperable digital assets and token economies. Just like IOTA, Shimmer is a DAG-based parallelized settlement layer with higher L2 anchoring capacity than standard blockchains. Shimmer is a validation ground for innovations geared for the IOTA network. Its native token is $SMR.
Tangle Bay has been operating nodes in the IOTA ecosystem since 2017. Gradually, the whole project has grown and also the different services that are now provided by Tangle Bay. The main focus is on quality and availability and the whole thing together with the IOTA community.
